Current Trends Hair - Lesson 3
In our second lesson of current trends hair with Emma Croombes, we were taught how to wash and straight blow dry. Firstly, Emma demonstrated how to wash hair on Chloe Blanchard. Chloe has long hair. Emma turned on the water and tested the temperature, it took a while to get warm but once it was she used it to wet all of Chloe's hair. She showed us the right techniques of washing hair, making sure it doesn't get on the clients face or into their eyes and how to make sure it was all soaked. Once this was done, Emma got the shampoo and told us how to shampoo once again making sure it doesn't go onto the clients. She showed us that we should always make sure we get under the head and do the back. Once the head was lathered up and covered in shampoo, Emma rinsed the shampoo and repeated. Again, Emma rinsed out the shampoo and then got the conditioner. She used the conditioner in the same way she used the shampoo, however, focusing a bit more on the ends where the dryness and damage is most likely. Once the hair was fully covered in conditioner, Emma rinsed it off. She explained that you should offer your clients a head massage once you have finished shampoo and conditioning and showed us how to do this and that you should apply some pressure but not a lot especially on the temples where it could, on rare occasions, cause the client to become unconscious. Once the hair was done, Emma slightly towel dried it to make sure it was damp and not soaking and then wrapped a towel around the hair to dry it even more whilst Chloe moved over into a chair infront of a mirror.
Emma now showed us how to do a straight blow dry. She brushed through Chloe's hair to make sure there were no tangles, starting at the bottom and working up so that you don't end up with one big not it the ends. She then sectioned it so that the majority of the hair was clipped to the top of the head and a small amount of hair at the back was left down. Emma showed us how to do the blow dry with a paddle brush although said you can also used round brushes as well.
Starting at one side of the head and working her way round, Emma explained that you have to blow dry the hair downwards with the hair dryer facing towards the floor. This way you get it as straight as it can be as you are not blowing the hair upwards which will cause it to go frizzy. She continued this around the whole head using sections at a time and brushing and tangles and knots out as she went. At the end of the blow dry, Chloe who has naturally curly hair, had very straight and soft hair.
I then went on to wash and blow dry Brittany Cason's hair.
I started by washing it with shampoo in the way that Emma showed us making sure I got all the areas and washing it thoroughly. I then repeated and conditioned. I also practiced a quick massage on her head to make sure I knew the technique. I then went onto blow dry her hair which is the first blow dry I had ever done. I added serum into Brittany's hair at the end to ensure the blow dryed stayed straight and soft.
Cons
Whilst washing Brittany's hair, as it was my first time washing someone's hair in this way, I found it quite difficult to keep the water from going onto Brittany's face and down her neck. I made sure I used my hand to block it however, I found this quite awkward to do and still managed to get some water on her. I feel like the more I practice washing hair the better I will get at keeping off the clients face and feel like it was an okay attempt for my first time. I also found that I needed to practice the massage a bit more as Brittany said that in some areas I was applying too little pressure and in some areas I was applying too much pressure. Once again, a first time for me which I feel will come easy with practice.
With the blow drying at first I found it quite difficult maneuvering the hair, brush and hair dryer at the same time. I kept knocking Brittany's head with them or loosing the hair off my brush and not getting my sections right. I also kept blowing the hair in different directions with the blow dryer and blowing it into my face aswell. (I was abit all over the place)
Pros
I found the techniques to shampoo and condition Brittany's hair easy and managed to do this quickly and efficiently. I also made sure that all the product was washed off the hair both times. I also found that I got the correct temperature well and made sure that this temperature was alright for Brittany and wasn't too hot or too cold.
Once I had got the hand of the blow drying after a few minutes I found it much easier and I started getting used to the technique. I was very happy with the result as Brittany had very straight and soft hair. (Admittedly Brittany has naturally very straight, fine hair so this wasn't as difficult as it would be on someone with thick and curly hair. However, I feel like I am okay with the technique and therefore should be able to do a good straight blow dry on most hair types).
