Mood board for shoot

Mood Board

I got my inspiration for the hair from catwalks such as Chanel Ready To Wear:

and Alexander Vauthier Ready To Wear:

I got my inspiration for makeup from Thakoon for the glowing, almost sweating looking skin and clean, simple base with little colour on the lips and soft, natural eyebrows.

Givenchy, as Pat McGrath incorporated a graphic gold winged eyeliner into the look, once again with a clean simple base but with a glossed lip which i really liked.

Dior also focuses with eyeliner on the eyes in different colours. The makeup team use paper cut outs stuck to the eyes to create this look, however i took more inspiration from the shape and colours used rather than the paper. Once again this was onto a clean, simple base.

I took inspiration from the colours used in Dries Van Noten, applying a gold line down the lip with once again a clean glowing skin really contrasted and stood out so i wanted to incorporate the gold into my look.

and finally, Christopher Kane once again used a beautiful glowing skin in his show, proving to be a very popular trend for SS15.

lesson 3 hair - hair pieces, switches and wefts

Wefts

In lesson 3 of current trends hair with Emma, we were learning how to apply switches, wefts and hair pieces. At first Emma showed us the difference between each one and what they were used for. She then showed us how to apply each one and the different styles you can do.
I went on to apply a weft to my model Rebecca Krassismenou's hair to add length to create a long fishtail plait.

I chose the colour that best matched Rebecca's hair out of a box that had limited colours in. I found the black/dark brown worked best and picked out a few different sections of wefts to apply.
I brushed them all out and make sure they werent tangled or knotted and then lay them out ready to work with.
I then brushed Rebecca's hair making sure it was also smooth and knot free. I applied a setting lotion so that it would stay where i styled it and kept smooth and clean without baby hairs. I then pulled her hair back and brushed it into a tight, slick pony tail in the middle of the head, making sure there were no lumps or bumps and the hair was smooth and sleek. Once i was happy with the pony tail, i used hairspray to smooth in some of the smaller loose hairs to make sure there were no fluffy bits and then began applying the weft.

I started by wrapped one section around the pony tail and pinning it in place at the end, tucking the pin into the hair so that it wasnt visible. I continued to do this until i felt that the length added was thick enough. Once i was happy i pinned the final bit in place and then took a small section of hair and wrapped it around the hair band in order to cover the wefts and band to make it look natural. I again pinned this in place. When i was happy i started on the fish tail plait.

I split the pony tail into two equal sections and then began from the right side, taking a small section from the back, bringing it over and then tucking it behind the other strand of hair. I repeated this all the way down until i got to the end. I then tied it in place and pulled out some of the sections to make some more even and to make it look slightly messy.

I went in with the finishing touches making sure there were still no fluffy or stray hairs, smoothing it down and then styling it over one shoulder.
I was really happy with the end result and think it was a really pretty and effective look. I think the weft look natural and blended with Rebecca's natural hair and really made the look better by adding that extra length needed.
I feel i could possibly have done it neater but i am making progress with this and it is alot better than some other styles that i have done.

Health and Safety
1. Make sure all my equipment and brushes are cleaned properly so as not the spread anything from one client to another.
2. Make sure that my pin tail comb is safely down or tucked into my palm whilst not being used so as not to accidently stab myself or others.

3. Make sure my hands are washed and clean before starting the look.
4. Make sure my hair is away from my face.
5. Make sure I dont have any excessive jewellery on that could catch, cut or scratch my model.
6. Make sure all my products are layed out properly and neatly so as not to cause a hazard.
7. Ensure there is nothing on the floor that can be tripped or fallen over and all bags and coats are away.
8. Make sure I am wearing shoes with a closed toe so as if anything is dropped it doesn't cause damage to the toes.

Step-by-step
In our first lesson back of current trends hair styling with Emma, we were learning how to plait and braid in different ways and how to incorporate these into hair styles. We focused mainly on french, dutch, fishtail and 4 strand plaits.
Going into this lesson I already knew I was unable to french plait, I have tried many times but with the end result always being useless. So in this lesson I decided I would really try hard to do this. With the help of Emma and Heather, I was shown step-by-step how to french plait.

I managed to get a loose plait into Heathers hair in my second try which I was really pleased with, this is probably the first time I had managed to get this far with it so I was quite proud of myself. I now know how to french plait so in future practices I know I need to focus on keeping it neater and tighter to the head in order to get the look I want.

Once I was happy with the technique of french plaiting, I went onto doing a fishtail. I have done fishtails before and so I was focusing on making sure it was even and how I was styling it out. I firstly created a ponytail style fishtail plait which I loosened and thickened and brought over Heathers shoulder which looked really nice. I then tried to do 2 fishtail plaits in a 'french plait style'. I sectioned the hair into two sides with a middle parting and then clipped up one of them. I then plaited the first side in a fishtail style. I found that this came out much better than the french plait that I did although I probably could have gone a bit tighter with it and made it slightly neater. I repeated this with the other section and left them falling down Heather's back. It was a really nice, simple and pretty style. I was happy with the end result.

lesson 2 - hair - French Pleat

French Pleat

Lesson 2 - Current Trends Hair

For our second lesson of term 2, current trends hair, we were once again looking at plaiting and braiding with particular focus on a French Pleat. This a very formal hair style, simple and easy but effective. Emma demonstrated the different ways of doing it and then we went on to try ourselves. Unfortunately i do not have any pictures of the look i did myself but do have some pictures of the demo that emma did.

(Photos - Aimee Topham,   Hair by Emma Croombes)

I started by sectioning a horseshoe type section to the front of the head and then clipping this out of the way with a sectioning clip. I then took hair from the left hand side, brushing it smooth and pulling round the head making sure it was flat and there were no bumps. I then clipped this in the middle of the head using the cross gripping technique all the way from the bottom to the top making sure it was fully clipped and anchored in, not loosing and tension or becoming loose and untidy. Then taking the other side of the hair i brushed this back in the same way as i did the right hand side, this time however i back combed the inner side of the section to give it more volume and more hold when creating the twist. Once i had back combed the hair i smoothed out the outer side of the section and brought it round and twisted it so it curled in on itself. I made sure this curl was loose and big and not tight to the head, otherwise you wouldnt get the height and volume that you want. I clipped this in place making sure it was tight to the head and well secured. Then using the front section of the hair, i brought this round over the pleat onto the top and created a nice curl on top to finish the look. I then hairsprayed any stray and loose hairs into place to refine it.

I found it quite difficult to do this hairstyle as I am not particularly good at hair. I managed to get the first few steps done to what I think is a quite good standard, but then was unable to actually roll and finish the pleat. This is something that I will continue to practice so that I can eventually do it properly.

lesson 4 hair - sleek ponytails and messy buns

Sleek Pony Tails

In this lesson we were practicing making the perfect sleek ponytail.
Heather Shotbolt was my model. I first brushed through her hair, making sure it wasnt knotted and was flowing nicely. I then pulled the hair back into a pony tail in the middle of the head. Using my tail comb i combed all the hair back, holding it tightly in place, making sure there were no lumps and bumps and all the hair was smooth and slick. I asked heather to look down and then made sure the underneath and back of the head was also sleek and wasnt drooping. I then used a hair band to tie the hair tightly in place and made sure it was in the middle. I then used 2 grips to grip the back of the hair under the pony tail to make sure it was very neat and tight. Using the end of my tail comb and hair spray, I sprayed back and tucked back all the loose, stray baby hairs so that the final look was clean and sleek.

I was really happy with the end result of the pony tail and think it looked very clean and sleek. It didnt have many loose hairs and was tight, but comfortable on the models head. I was very happy with how it turned out.

lesson 3 makeup - b&w photog / texture

Black & White Makeup

As Branka was not in for this lesson, we instead had Holly Davies teach us how to create makeup for black and white photography. She explained that as there is obviously no colour in the look, that its best not to use too much colour within the makeup itself as it would just show as shades of grey.

Keeping this in mind i decided to create two different looks on my model Heather Shotbolt.
Firstly for a more natural look I applied strobe cream all over the face and a base for the makeup, this will shine through and create a nice glowing skin. I then applied Mac Face and Body in C1 all over the face, blending it in and making sure it was clean and flawless. I then concealed slightly using Mac Concealer Palette in Light. Once i was happy with this i powdered the forehead, nose, chin and under the eyes to set the makeup so it didnt look greasy. I then use Mac Sculpting Powder in Sculpt, to give a little shade to the cheekbones, just to add a contrast for the picture. I used Mac eyeshadow in dark brown to lightly draw in the eyebrows to a natural shape to frame the eyes. I then used Mac Eyeshadow in Brun all over the eye, blending it out into the crease and socket to give a nice, clean wash of colour. Using Illamaqua gel liner i created a clean winged eyeliner to add contrasting colours to the eye. Once i was happy with this i moved onto the lips, using Mac Ruby Woo all over the lips. I finished the look with a little bit of highlighter on the cheekbone.

For the heavier look, i applied more contour under the cheekbone, to give a heavier contoured look and i also applied a lot of highlighter to the cheek bone and brown bone. I used the same red lipstick for the lips and made the most difference to the eyes. I created a dark black smokey eye that winged out to the corner of the eyebrow and then using Kryolan Gel Eyeliner in Snow, I applied a contrasting white winged liner to the look which made the eye stand out quite well and created a really nice affect. I applied eyeshadow under the eye in the bottom lash line to frame it and to make the look heavier. I then used Mac eyeshadow in Dark Brown to draw in the eye brow in a high arched, dramatic style. I then used a white eyeshadow under the brow bone to highlight it.

Once i was happy with both of the looks i applied a natural eyelash to both the looks that i felt worked well with both the heavy look and natural look. I was really happy with the finished result.

I was really happy with how this look went and think that both of them were really clean looks.
If i was to change anything about these in the future i would probably tidy the models brows up a little more so that it looked cleaner and also maybe powdered just slightly more. Overall i was really pleased though.

lesson 4 makeup - textures w/ cream and powders

Textures with Glitters and Pigments

In our 4th lesson of current trends makeup, we had a cover with Holly and Branka was away, to create a look using pigments and glitter, taking inspiration from Pat Mcgrath or similar artists and looks.
Holly showed us how to use tape under the eye to create a line that we were happy with so the glitter didnt go everywhere and look really messy, but more clean and sharp.
She applied sequins and different colours of glitter to make the look.

I then went away and tried myself. I think i got a bit carried away with this and decided to do a big rainbow on Brittany's face using pigments and glitters, but this looked really silly and not very good so i wasnt pleased with it. I did only have about 20 minutes to do this look as Brittany, who was working on me first, had overrun by quite a bit of time on her look so i only had a little bit of time at the end to try something.

I am going to do this look again to do something better and more in line with the inspiration we were using.
